Tips
Watering Melons
Keep watermelon and cantaloupe well-watered when the vines are growing, say experts with the University of Georgia Extension Service. But keep them on the dry side when fruit is ripening.
Organic Bug Trap
Having a problem with earwigs or other pesky bugs in your garden? Try this easy trap that uses household trash! Save a small can, one to two inches high, like tuna or pet food. Clean it, fill it almost to the top with water, then add a tablespoon or so of vegatable oil. Put it in your garden. Check it for pesky creepy-crawlies each day. They go in for a swim or a drink and be unable to get out past the oil.
The Problem with Salt
Did you know that the accumulation in the soil could cause abnormal fall color, needle-tip burn and browning that starts on leaves’ edges and progresses toward their middle veins? Be careful in the winter when you're using salt to de-ice! If you're in an area where roads are de-iced with salt during the winter months, be sure to flush nearby grounds with water early in the Spring. Adding the water will force the salt below tree and plant roots. Also, be sure to rinse spray off plants near the road to avoid losing some of your new plants.
